Managing risk in industrial environments – building safer workplaces

In this blog post, our Safety Manager, Dave Curry discusses how a proactive approach to workplace safety helps reduce incidents, ensure compliance and build a culture where employees feel confident that their wellbeing is prioritised.

In industrial and electrical settings, managing risk is not just about compliance, it’s about protecting people, equipment and operations. With heavy machinery, complex electrical systems and high-stakes workflows, the margin for error is slim. In this blog post, our Safety Manager, Dave Curry discusses how a proactive approach to workplace safety helps reduce incidents, ensure compliance and build a culture where employees feel confident that their wellbeing is prioritised.

Dave’s tips for risk management

  1. Regular safety training – Ensuring workers are familiar with lockout/tagout procedures, emergency response and electrical safety standards.
  2. Preventative maintenance – Keeping machinery in optimal condition to reduce failures and accidents.
  3. Transparent reporting – Encouraging reporting of hazards and near-misses fosters a culture of accountability.
  4. Technology integration – Smart monitoring and AI-powered systems improve real-time awareness and reduce risk during complex tasks.
  5. Compliance with electrical safety standards –  Safety guidelines and regulatory requirements maintain a safe working environment and avoid violations.

The role of technology in safer workplaces

Emerging technologies are transforming how we manage industrial risks. AI, the Internet of Things (IoT) and predictive analytics are enabling safer human–machine interactions, enhancing situational awareness and reducing human error.

While working on the Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) at Immingham Power Station, Salko UK has taken a hands-on, data-driven approach to workplace safety.

One such innovation is the Safety Shield, an AI-driven human-form recognition and collision avoidance system now being utilised in the Salko UK work scope at the Immingham site.

Unlike other solutions that trigger frequent false alarms, the Safety Shield identifies human presence specifically within danger zones, alerting operators only when there is a genuine risk of collision. This accuracy and efficiency represents a step forward in protecting workers around heavy machinery.

Site supervisors at Immingham carry out continuous inspections, feeding real-time data into weekly safety reports. This transparent process fosters accountability and encourages worker-driven safety, where employees actively identify hazards and propose control measures.

According to Dave, by combining human vigilance with AI technology, we are setting new standards in industrial risk management.

Looking ahead

The future of industrial safety lies in prevention, not reaction. With advances in technology and AI-powered monitoring, risks can be identified and mitigated before they escalate. At Salko UK, we remain committed to creating workplaces where safety, innovation, and compliance go hand in hand.
