Since Salko UK was established in 2000, we have experienced several turning points which have shaped our growth into one of Yorkshire’s leading engineering specialists. Over the last 25 years, our company has built a diverse client base across sectors including nuclear, construction and even film production, fueling Salko UK’s evolution into a fully integrated solutions provider.
To celebrate Yorkshire Day, we have taken a trip down memory lane to look back at our local legacy and ambitious plans.
Founded in 2000 by Dean Murphy in Goole, East Yorkshire, we’ve transformed from a small provider of skilled engineers in power generation to a well-respected name in the mining and engineering sectors under the leadership of Managing Director Steve Mason.
Our roots trace back to the early 2000s, a time of challenges brought on by coal mine closures that displaced many skilled workers. However, our experience at Hatfield Colliery – one of the last coal mines in the UK – guided our evolution. As the industry changed, so did we, adapting to the growing demand for flexible, specialised engineering teams.
Today, we no longer just supply individual specialists, we offer fully integrated mechanical and electrical teams for large-scale projects. With 20 full-time employees and a 3.5 acre site in Spaldington, East Yorkshire, complete with fabrication and workshop facilities, we’re proud, recruiting new talent predominantly from our Yorkshire region.
Recently, we solidified our position in the energy sector by being awarded the mechanical scope for a significant open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) project at Immingham Power Station. Salko UK’s journey is a testament to resilience and adaptability as we continue to grow and innovate.
The UK’s national push toward industrial decarbonisation, reflected in major regional frameworks such as the Humber 2030 Vision, has accelerated the demand for energy infrastructure.
These projects not only require technical innovation but also a reliable, specialist workforce capable of delivering at scale – an area where Salko UK has strengths and is strategically positioned to service this part of the UK.
Our clients are primarily from the power generation, energy and industrial sectors with a strong regional focus in Yorkshire and the Humber and national reach across the UK and Ireland.
This year, we have been awarded the full mechanical scope for the construction of a coveted new Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) facility at Immingham Power Station in North Lincolnshire.
The OCGT facility is a key part of the Humber Zero project, which aims to capture nearly a fifth of the UK Government’s carbon capture targets by 2030.
This cutting-edge facility will significantly boost the UK’s energy resilience and aid the transition to a net-zero future. Designed specifically to support grid stability and deliver reliable power when it’s most needed, the turbine has the capacity to generate up to 299 megawatts of electricity – enough to sustainably power around 30,000 homes across the UK.
To hit the ground running on this project, Salko UK is deploying a dedicated team of 74 specialists. Together, they will focus on core elements of the mechanical, electrical, and rigging works needed to construct the 299 MW turbine. We take great pride in the fact that over 70 percent of our workforce comes from the local region. This commitment not only supports our project but also bolsters the Humber economy and strengthens local communities.
As we take this significant step in our journey, we are proud to contribute to a sustainable future for the UK, while also nurturing the local workforce and economy.
