National Apprenticeship Week – Powering the next generation of M&E engineers

As the engineering sector stands at a pivotal crossroads, the need to attract, train and retain skilled professionals has never been more urgent.

With 35 percent of the UK engineering workforce now aged over 50, and up to 20 percent expected to retire within the next decade*. The industry faces a growing skills gap that demands immediate, strategic action.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, this blog explores what you can expect from a mechanical and electrical (M&E) apprenticeship or traineeship and how, when supported by ongoing upskilling and improverships, training programmes  help build a resilient, future-ready workforce.

What can you expect from an M&E apprenticeship?

An M&E apprenticeship provides practical, on-the-job learning alongside experienced engineers working on live projects across the UK.

Apprentices gain exposure to electrical installations, mechanical systems and complex infrastructure projects, developing technical competence while understanding how projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to high standards.

This hands-on approach allows individuals to build confidence early in their careers while gaining insight into the realities of working within the engineering and energy sectors.

Discovering pathways and progression

The M&E sector offers a wide range of career pathways, particularly as the UK accelerates towards Net Zero. Apprenticeships enable individuals to develop core skills before progressing into specialist roles across electrical engineering, mechanical disciplines, controls and instrumentation, project delivery and site management.

As technologies evolve and demand increases across renewable energy, power storage and critical infrastructure, apprenticeships offer a strong foundation for long-term career development.

The role of improverships

While apprenticeships remain a vital entry route into the industry, they are not a standalone solution to the skills gap. Completion rates vary and not all trained individuals remain within the sector or move into areas experiencing the greatest demand.

That’s where improverships play a critical role – improverships are structured upskilling programmes designed to assess existing employee capabilities, identify skills gaps and deliver targeted development. Often supporting former apprentices and experienced engineers alike, improverships ensure skills remain current as technology, regulation and industry requirements continue to evolve.

From apprentice to Operations Manager

Sim Sharphouse, Operations Manager at Salko UK, is a strong example of how apprenticeships and continuous development can shape long-term careers.

Sim began his journey in 2009 as an electrical apprentice. Through hands-on experience, ongoing upskilling and professional development including NEBOSH and CompEX qualifications – he progressed into leadership and now oversees projects, teams and commercial delivery across the business.

His journey demonstrates the value of combining apprenticeships with improverships and continued learning to support both individual progression and organisational growth.

Powering the future

With a significant proportion of the engineering workforce approaching retirement age, investing in early careers has never been more critical. An M&E apprenticeship is the starting point of a much wider journey and when supported by improverships and continuous development, it becomes the foundation for a sustainable, rewarding career in a sector central to the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, (9th-15th February)  Salko UK remains committed to investing in people at every stage of their career – building the skills, leadership and expertise needed to power the infrastructure of tomorrow.
